The open low-friction ring is a very useful accessory for guiding the Rope from the attachment point to the cockpit, for example. It is also used by many sailors to make hauleur barbers or halyard spreaders.

Karver open low-friction ring
The passage is optimized to allow the Rope to pass through with a slight force, and to prevent it escaping during use.
This open ring allows the jib furler to be perfectly aligned in the turret and the Rope to run perfectly along the stanchions. Furlers are by definition flying, and open rings make it easy to install and remove the line.
The open low-friction ring was originally designed for the furling line, but is now used for many other applications: barber-haulers, reefing, lazzy jacks, etc…
