Whipping twine: polyester or Dyneema®, what is the best choice?

Polyester or Dyneema® whipping twine, what is the best choice? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each one? We can help you to choose, according to your skills in whipping or the type of whipping that you wish to make.

Whipping: the tighter, the better!

You will find our new “Products Guide” section on spools of whipping twine. So, did you think that it was not necessary to be advised on such a “basic” product? Without going into detail, whipping twine deserves as much credit as sliced bread. Before detailing the differences between whipping twine made of polyester and of Dyneema®, let us remind you of a basic rule. The solidity of a whipping, no matter the type of twine depends on its tightness. the tighter, the better!

In order to be robust, a whipping must have a diameter that is inferior to rope. That is a guarantee of efficient tightness!

Which whipping twine for which use?

Do you have sufficient experience to make whippings with Dyneema®? Do not hurt your hands for nothing! Choose Dyneema®, which lasts longer, for whipping subjected to intense chafing: in the case of chafe sleeves which pass through cleats or around winches. With less resistance to chafing, polyester is, however, more than sufficient for rope terminations, which are less subjected to wear.

Is your deck covered with aggressive non-skid coating? Systematically use whipping twine with Dyneema® if you don’t want to spend your time redoing your whippings!

Glowfast phosphorescent whipping twine

Glowfast® phosphorescent whipping twine (polyester) is not exactly the latest fashion craze! It is really useful at night because it enables one to mark ropes, in order to find settings easily, even in complete darkness. This whipping twine is phosphorescent and not fluorescent; this means that it stores light during the day to provide it all night long.

The phosphorescent whipping twine can be used to mark dock lines, so as to avoid the risk of beheading people passing by in tenders!

UV, chafing: for each fibre its protection

Had you ever noticed that the twine made of polyester feels greasy when handled? It is, in fact, covered with suet that protects the fibres from UVs and chafing. Whipping twine made of Dyneema® is not covered in suet but soaked in a coating solution. This treatment has a dual function: it filters UVs and makes the fibres smooth. In this way, there is no risk of them “hooking” onto each other and, so they are no longer prone to chafing.
